Today I Learned: AI is not cheap

Thanks to some great projects in my line of work, I've been immersing myself in AI recently. Nothing fancy, we're just getting to use AI to produce sales material and things like that a little bit faster and in a more automated way.

I'm one of those who happen to think we'll need human capabilities in just about every sphere for as long as time exists. At the end of the day, someone has to turn the machines on or, in a doomsday scenario, off!

But the explosion in AI services and infrastructure has been nothing short of spectacular. Anyhow, today I got the reminder that all this stuff has a real cost to run. Companies are spending big money behind the scenes to give us the capabilities we have today, and it's nice for us as end users to get it for free, at least some of the time.

Lex, an AI writing program, for lack of a better term, that I just signed up for, had a waitlist where I became, like, user #11 thousand something. They sent me a nice reminder via email to say AI is not cheap, and since they haven't dialled in monetization for the stuff they provide yet, we're having to make do with this sizable waitlist.

Anyhow, I can't wait to try this new platform. I've heard nothing but good news. Let's see if the machines live up to the hype!
